Vector Integration

Since integration is a linear process, studying vector functions and integration together is natural. Indeed recall that with functions of one variable, definite integration is the process of taking a limit of a Riemann sum. Basically, since taking limits and Riemann sums both are linear processes, so is integration.

Definition (Indefinite Integral of a Vector Function) Let

vector integration _gr_1.gif],

where vector integration _gr_2.gif], vector integration _gr_3.gif], and vector integration _gr_4.gif] are continuous on the closed interval vector integration _gr_5.gif] Then the indefinite integral of vector integration _gr_6.gif] is

vector integration _gr_7.gif]

Example (Indefinite Integral of a Vector Function) Compute

vector integration _gr_8.gif]

    Solution. We have,

vector integration _gr_9.gif]

vector integration _gr_10.gif]

where vector integration _gr_11.gif] is a constant vector.

Definition (Definite Integral of a Vector Function) Let

vector integration _gr_12.gif],

where vector integration _gr_13.gif], vector integration _gr_14.gif], and vector integration _gr_15.gif] are continuous on the closed interval vector integration _gr_16.gif] Then the definite integral of vector integration _gr_17.gif] is the vector

vector integration _gr_18.gif]

Example (Definite Integral of a Vector Function) Given the vector function

vector integration _gr_19.gif]

Find the value of vector integration _gr_20.gif] for which vector integration _gr_21.gif]

    Solution. We have,

vector integration _gr_22.gif]

vector integration _gr_23.gif]

Thus, vector integration _gr_24.gif]and vector integration _gr_25.gif] So, vector integration _gr_26.gif] vector integration _gr_27.gif]
