Trigonometry
By David A. Smith
Trigonometry presents how to apply radian and degree angle measures, how to solve right triangles using trigonometric functions, the Pythagorean Theorem, and facts about angles of right triangles, and also how to solve non-right triangles using the Law of Cosines and the Law of Sines. When introducing the trigonometric functions, emphasis should be placed on understanding how the notion of similar triangles is used to define the trigonometric functions. Trigonometry also presents how to graph and interpret the graphs of the six trigonometric functions, how to simplify and prove trigonometric identities, how to solve trigonometric equations, and how to solve basic word or application problems using trigonometric functions and the inverse trigonometric functions. A serious course in trigonometry also details the relationship between polar coordinates, complex numbers, Euler's formula, and De Moivre's theorem.

Students, in 6th grade math, study integers, rational numbers, percents, exponents, patterns and relationships, graphing techniques, two and three dimensional figures, distance, perimeter, area, volume, and capacity. Mathematical modeling is experienced using materials and pictures to develop problem-solving techniques. Sixth grade math students also study percentages, fractions and decimals. Solving problems involving ratios and... |
