Classical Approach October 10, 2000 Adrian C Keister (Radford, VA USA) 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
I used this book for Multivariate Calculus only, but I found it to be clearly worded and very helpful. The exercises I found to be complete. Now, as I am tutoring Calc I and II, I find that another strength of the book is its classical approach, which I appreciate greatly. The author never once leaves a topic solely to the technology, but tells the student the theory behind the technology. That way, the student can instantly recognize whether an answer the computer gives him is correct or not. Highly recommended!

This is the most intelligent math book I have ever used. Everything is clear and easy to follow.
I thought it was a great book August 15, 2005 Mason Jackson (Norman, OK, USA) 4 out of 12 found this review helpful
I love this textbook and all of my friends that have taken Engineering Calculus have too. In fact of all the textbooks I have used in all of my classes (math and non-math) this is one of two that I would give five stars (the other being the Physics book I used). Of the math classes I have taken this is the only math book I have used that is not useless. It does a great job of explaining things, the presentation is spectacular with the way it highlights theorems and definitions, and the examples in the book are great and relavent. The problems in there are great at teaching the student as well. I just don't see why there is so many people who hate this book. The only recommendation I would make is that you also buy the solution manuals to this book, it makes my Calculus MUCH easier since it gives step by step solutions to all the odd numbered problems.
Very decent September 3, 2003 jasmine (FL, USA) 2 out of 7 found this review helpful
I found hard to believe people saying negative thing about this book. I personally believe this is the best book out there. The basic concepts are very clearly illustrated and the exercise problems are very helpful for understanding the book content. If you ever had other calculus books to compare with, you will know exactly what I am taking about: this is the best of all. I love this book and it really aroused my interest in Calculus.

I wholeheartedly concur with Stan VerNooy's review. All introductory texts in all fields should be patterned after this book. It has clear explanations and several worked examples. Most ostensible "beginner" texts are actually written an intermediate or advanced level. Perhaps professors with 20 years or more experience believe clear explanations are unnecessary or maybe it has been so long for them that they no longer remember what it was like to be a beginner. Whatever the reason they assume that you know material that you are reading the book to gain. Stewart is not like that. He takes the time to illuminate his topics and he doesn't just give results he shows how they were reached. I only wish that I could have found a linear algebra book like this. Doesn't matter now...I've already graduated.
