1 out of 5 stars Dismal, Equivalent to a Textbook Glossary   July 29, 2008

It is always good to know where criticism is coming from. Let me start first by saying that I already have an elementary and social studies certification, and that I have just enough elective credits to be certified in middle school science. My collegiate credits were in biology and ecology, enough for an MS certificate, but not enough for a major science content area certificate. I thought this book would suffice in helping me refresh my middle school memory on the other science areas that I did not take college classes in (physics, chemistry, etc); I thought wrong.
To start, the book is spotted with many errors - typographical, formatting, and content-based. Sometimes they are minor ones that just stand out, but sometimes they are serious enough to ruin the integrity of an entire section of the book (the review on electricity circuits, for example, makes constant references to a non-existent visual aid).
Regarding the book's content, the book is about 160 pages, approximately fifty of which are suggestions on how to take a test. The remaining hundred-odd pages are science content. The content is entirely in the format of a textbook glossary. There are countless definitions of each and every scientific term, but it is up to the reader to find the relationships between the terms and to understand how that term or those terms actually work and function in a scientific system. A simple example is that the book defines valence electrons, but leaves the reader on his/her own to understand how chemical bonding works. Also note that there is NO PRACTICE EXAM included.
I used this as my primary source of review for the MS Science Praxis, and came away from the Praxis with quite a feeling of uncertainty. I have used other review books for other Praxis tests before. Though none were perfect, none were this poor, either. This book does review some (not nearly all) of the content necessary for its relevant exam, albeit in horrifically poor fashion, and for that, I award it one star. A lack of alternative products that give better review for your buck is the only thing that stops me from shunning this product completely.
