5 out of 5 stars Excellent and thorough resource - the title doesn't lie!   May 23, 2004

I homeschool my special needs 6yo son, and this was exactly the right curriculum guide and activity book for math that we needed. It is truly a *complete* overview of math concepts for this age - from geometry, to classification, to ordinals, skip counting, beginning and intermediate levels of addittion and subtraction, time and money, and even an introduction to division and multiplication. Every section has cut-out and manipulative tear-outs. The illustrations are bright, colorful and engaging. The lessons start out with the extremely basic (some would say perhaps below first grade level - numbers recognition, etc.) and progressively get more and more advanced. Each concept has an entire section devoted to it, to allow for plenty of review on any concept your child is having difficulty with. As if that weren't enough, each section ALSO has suggestions for extra activities that will strengthen each lesson in your child's mind. The only thing that would have made this book absolutely perfect is if it had maybe one page per section devoted to the parent/teacher and giving tips on how to approach each lesson concept. Otherwise? It rivals the quality and depth of a lot of math curriculae for homeschoolers that I've seen go for twenty times as much. It's an incredible value and I can't recommend it enough.

A high quality workbook from AEP. It organizes 2 grades math in progressive topics and gives drills on each of them. Very comprehensive. Colorful pictures attract kids attention. Graphs demonstrate concepts. Word problems encourage critical thinking. Many sheets practice adding and subtracting facts. A very good book worth every penny you spend. If AEP wants my suggestions to improve, I do wish they split the book to two, so kids get all they need at their level. Also, the problems are a bit simple.

With this book covering the fundamentals so well, you can additionally find some more challenging programs. My friend referred me to a Houston community web site http://www.beestar.org. It provides free math exercises every week with interesting math problems. I signed up my son last semester and we both like it. In the past my son only played games on the Internet. Now he solves math problems online. A good supplement.

Overall I was a bit disappointed with "The Complete Book of Math for Grades K-2" because I was expecting something a bit more thorough. This book is NOT math curriculum, and it's not a math review workbook, it's math activities and busy-work pages geared for the classroom teacher. I do not recommend this resource for homeschoolers unless you are looking for extra busy work for your k-2 grader. None of the concepts are explained and none of the subjects are reviewed thoroughly. However as just a supplemental resource I am, overall, quite pleased. The material is divided into sections by topic - patterns, telling time, money, graphs, etc. and then it appears to progresses in difficulty from a Kindergarten to Grade 2 level, however there's no indicators in the book what is K-level work, what is Grade 1 level work and what is Grade 2 level work. There are a dozen or so activities that are not workbook-oriented, (stringing beads, counting macaroni etc.) there are a half-dozen activities using copies from the book to create a game and then lots of busy-work pages. Most of them are full-color but they aren't so colorful or busy that they detract from the work. There are some really colorful addition and subtraction drill pages and the money section is especially well done. It's not the best thing I've bought so far - I liked the Kumon workbooks much better, they are much more thorough but still not a comprehensive math curriculum - neither is this the worst thing I've bought online either.
