A Practical and Comprehensive Resource March 9, 2008 Mark C. Howell (Southern California) 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
In the long tradition of The Lost Art of Disciple Making, Multiplying Disciples, and Disciples Are Made, Not Born, Organic Disciplemaking: How to promote Christian leadership development through personal relationships, biblical discipleship, mentoring, and Christian community is designed to do more than tell about the need for making disciples of Jesus. This is a book that painstakingly provides a path from start to finish. This book has the potential to be used by small group coaches to disciple and develop small group leaders. With today's small group ministries launching groups with leaders just a step ahead of their members, this could be a very helpful resource providing a pathway for mentoring. In its pages you will find more than stories of how it's working at Xenos. You'll also find the practical steps needed to begin a disciplemaking ministry in your own church. More importantly, you may find the inspiration to look for one life to pour into. After all, that is the point.
Great Primer on Making Disciples May 7, 2008 Seth B. Barnes (Gainesville, GA) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
For a number of years now I've been working on a practical how-to book on discipleship. Dennis McCallum has beaten me to the punch with Organic Disciple Making. He's written the most practical book on how to disciple people I've ever read. Time and time again I find myself saying, "Yup, he nailed that one; that's how it works." For example, early on the book covers the subject of modeling and its key role in making disciples. Later it delves into the practical questions of how you counsel and disciple through various issues or how you deal with blocks in their development. For example McCallum distinguishes the difference between weakness and resistance and the appropriate response of a disciple maker. A disciple struggling with weakness generally needs encouragement, whereas a disciple who is resistant often needs confrontation and possibly discipline. I loved that the book had a whole section on coaching and I loved that its counsel is both biblically grounded and rooted in the everyday experience of someone who leads 250 home churches. I've read so many books on discipleship and few drill down to address the questions ordinary people have as they struggle to help their disciples grow. All of us who have committed ourselves to following Jesus and representing his name need to learn how to make disciples. It was the last thing he asked us to do before leaving the earth. If you as a Jesus-follower feel like you need help in learning how to do this in a way that feels natural, do yourself a favor and get Organic Disciple Making.
Excellent Practical Guide January 12, 2008 Istvan Gajary 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
This book strikes a good balance between explaining essential principles you want to impart to others and dealing with practical issues that come up as you mentor people. It is clear the author has had decades of experience in helping people mature in their ministry and uses many real life examples to illustrate his principles. Most importantly, it is well grounded in scripture. I recommend this to anyone who is serious about becoming successful in mentoring people.
Comprehensive! June 21, 2006 Randall G. Neighbour (Houston, Texas, USA) 14 out of 17 found this review helpful
I was fortunate enough to have edited this book prior to publication. McCallum and Lowery leave no stone unturned when covering the discipleship process that goes on every day among a HUGE percentage of their home church, Xenos Christian Fellowship in Columbus, Ohio. Their process is called "organic" because it is highly relational and discipling others is part of the basic DNA of this church. I was able to glean more things for my own discipleship relationships than space provides here, hence the title "comprehensive". This book covers every aspect of discipling another Christian... from grounding them in the Word to dealing with resistance, to speaking the truth in love... it's all covered and more! If you can't find the book here as of yet, do contact the publisher directly. Just Google "touch outreach ministries" and their web site will pop right up and you can even download a sample chapter of the book!
This book is so needed!!! July 10, 2006 Ryan Lowery (columbus, oh USA) 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
I've read plenty of books that talk about why we should disciple, books that cast a powerful vision, and kindle a burning fire to be used by God in this way. But I have always wished there were more out there that gets into the practical aspects of HOW to disciple. This book is as helpful and practical as it gets. I've trained under Dennis, and Jesse for years and still I need to read and re-read this book, because discipleship is such a complex task, it's easy to let a lot of things fall through the cracks. This book is an excellent foundation for a beginning discipler, and a supreme refresher/reference manual for those who have been at it for years.
