Product Description Math and Science for Young Children 4E focuses on the integration of mathematics and science with other subject areas for children from birth through age eight. Based on theories of child development and learning, this book is compatible with guidelines and standards of many national professional organizations. Mathematics and science concepts are related to national standards and present a common framework for inclusion with music and movement, language arts, visual arts, science and social studies activities. Problem-solving is emphasized as the means for constructing concepts with a balance of naturalistic, informal, and structured activities and experiences. Units are sequenced developmentally from prekindergarten through the primary levels. Each concept unit includes assessment, instructional, and evaluation strategies. Developmentally appropriate assessment is promoted through observation, recording of anecdotal records, checklists, video and audio tapes, and performance evaluations. The book also offers information on materials and Web resources, technology, setting up learning centers, active approaches to math and science, and parent involvement. The appendices provide additional material, assessment tasks, children s books with math and science concepts, and the code of practice on the appropriate and safe use of animals in schools.

Tied For First August 9, 2006 Reginald Williams (Denmark, SC United States) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Here we find Weber State's Dr. Charlesworth showing us again how to put together a fine student-friendly textbook (What else really works?) So, so, so many pictures and graphics to interact with in this book!!! Sperry Smith's math early childhood book may do the same at a smaller price, but this book out does everyone else in terms of "showing AND telling". The best part about this book is how it chooses to see science and math as inseparable concepts. I love that idea because children will eventually see this connection when they get to middle and high school math, science, biology, physics, and chemistry classes. Why not start the connecting process during the early childhood years? If you can swallow the near $100 price, this book will do well...otherwise your safe with Sperry Smith's more economical text.
Fantastic Resource September 28, 2008 Sarah P (Chicago, IL) First, let me say that I am NOT a math person. Because of this, I was a little anxious about getting a book that would be easy for me to understand so that I could bring enriching and understandable math and science experiences to the children in my classroom. This book is very reader friendly and the activities are fun and great. I 100% recommend it!

Good Activities August 16, 2006 Liz (Nj) 1 out of 7 found this review helpful
This book has pretty good math activities. I like the way the books chapters are divided different types of math, i.e. sorting, place value, etc.
