Product Description
Designed for the first two semesters of a three-semester engineering calculus course, Calculus of a Single Variable: Early Transcendental Functions, 4/e, continues to offer instructors and students innovative teaching and learning resources. Two primary objectives guided the authors in the revision of this book: to develop precise, readable materials for students that clearly define and demonstrate concepts and rules of calculus; and to design comprehensive teaching resources for instructors that employ proven pedagogical techniques and save time. The Larson/Hostetler/Edwards Calculus program offers a solution to address the needs of any calculus course and any level of calculus student.Calculus of a Single Variable: Early Transcendental Functions, 4/e, contains Chapters 1-10 of the full Calculus: Early Transcendental Functions, 4/e, text. Every edition from the first to the fourth of Calculus: Early Transcendental Function, 4/e, has made the mastery of traditional calculus skills a priority, while embracing the best features of new technology and, when appropriate, calculus reform ideas. Now, the Fourth Edition is part of the first calculus program to offer algorithmic homework and testing created in Maple so that answers can be evaluated with complete mathematical accuracy.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of the Best   September 7, 2000

I have taught calculus for over 20 years, from about half a dozen books: Thomas, Swokowski, Anton, Stewart, and others. Two years ago our university adopted the 6th Edition of Larson. As a pedagodical tool, this text is head and shoulders about all the others. The text uses abundand graphics, a clear design, concise writing, thoughtful examples, and carefully crafted exercises to make calculus accessible to students. I have never had so many students volunteer compliments about a text. This text is simply the "best of the best."

5 out of 5 stars Advanced Calculus... for dummies   June 27, 2001

I attended the Air Force Academy Preparatory School, and this book was issued to me. It has got to be the most helpful, easily understood, and well written calculus books ever to find its way to a school. The illustrations help visual learners to "see" what a formula looks like in three dimensions in latter chapters, and the practice sets go in order of necessity of learning (i.e. - early problems develop skills necessary to answer later problems, with no monotonous repetition of the same concepts as in most math books). It also has reference pages for basic formulas, so it becomes an invaluable tool for later calculus classes.

5 out of 5 stars My advice - don't do it alone.   September 17, 2002

This book is good because it give you clear (easy) examples of the material it is explaining. The practice problems are also very good because they start off from the most basic then progress to advanced. This books has a lot of practical real world problems. Some of the material can be difficult at times, that's why I suggest you purchase "3,000 Solved Problems in Calculus (Schaums Solved Problems Series)" in addition to this book. The Solved Problems Series helps when you're studying quick examples just before the test.

5 out of 5 stars Brief but adequate for understanding the concepts.   May 30, 2006

This book is pretty nice. It provides you a lot useful concepts with brief explanation. Your job is to study and do the homework to digest that such concepts ( you'd better have a solution book that comes along with it). Don't blame for the book not covering everything as you expected, like other science courses, you should have a fair understanding the basics before go up to higher level.

5 out of 5 stars From an AP Calculus teacher   June 1, 2008

This book has almost no differences from the 8th edition other than it is an older edition. Larson covers virtually all topics in calculus with multiple approaches preparing students for success whether it's on the AP exam or taking a course in Calculus. The authors focus on concepts and not just calculations enabling a deeper understanding of calculus. As a teacher, I appreciate this author's work.
