4 out of 5 stars Very Thorough Book   June 14, 2008

I am teaching from this book this summer, and I have not had the problems that other reviewers have described. This book is written for people with a pretty good understanding of high school algebra - after all, it is a college algebra book. It is not watered down at all, and the material is presented in some depth. However, I have found that this book does a really good job of warning students about common mistakes. I have found it clear (I can't say that for every algebra book I've used.) and my students have not complained, either. I would use this book again.

3 out of 5 stars Dazed and Confused   April 18, 2001

This book will leave you dazed and confused if you don't have a lot of mathematical background. The authors assume that you already know everything about algebra and don't really explain certain things or steps that you need to take to get a certain answer. In order to completely understand this book you need the intermediate algebra book that has been written by almost all the same authors... If you don't use the intermediate algebra book as a reference you'll just be dazed and confused!

1 out of 5 stars Sadly disappointed   December 7, 2005

This text is a pathetic excuse for educational material. It gives meager examples and many are not even applicable to the chapter exercises. By far this is the poorest written text I have encountered in three years of college.

1 out of 5 stars College Algebra, 9th edition, by Lial   June 8, 2005

I just got done with taking my final in College Algebra using this textbook. I was extremely frustrated and stressed during the whole course because I just couldn't get it! This book did not explain enough and just quickly glossed over or assumed that you knew the info already. Definitely not written for students, but for professors already gifted in algebra!! Needless to say, I struggled through this whole course. I had to buy three other algebra books just to understand what this textbook left out. I would not recommend this textbook at all!

1 out of 5 stars How to teach algebra to mathematicians...   September 5, 2003

This book was not written for students. It was written for those already fluent in algebra. Why this was chosen as the textbook for my college algebra course, I will never know.
The explanations are terse, and if the student does not already posess a natural affinity for mathematics, lead to even greater confusion. Vital steps are glossed over as if the author thinks everyone reading the book instantly understands without explanation or example.
