Unleash your personal God given vision. June 9, 2007 Jonathan Stephens (Rochester, NY USA) 17 out of 20 found this review helpful
This book was one of the most inspiring books I have ever read. If you are looking for a thick theological book, this is not it. Hybels does use scripture throughout, but this is more of an inspirational writing. He uses his own personal story, the stories of well known leaders (Mother Teresa, Bono, Martin Luther King Jr...), and the lives of a few people from the Bible. Although this book is relevant to people of any age, I would highly urge high school seniors and college students to read this book. I purchased two additional copies to give to people like this in my life. If you are looking for a push to take a step out and fulfill the thing you know you were created to do or you are looking for direction in finding that thing you were created for - this is a MUST READ! I will always look back on this book as a milestone in my journey of fulfilling God's leading in my life.
Light Read Think Book September 17, 2007 Lisa Crum (Powell, Ohio) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Bill Hybels is not C.S. Lewis, Donald Miller, or Richard Foster when it comes to writing in ways that take you to unexplored areas of thought. But he does make me think. "Why do people do what they do?" is the motivation behind Holy Discontent, Fueling the Fire That Ignites Personal Vision. That's my kind of question. He offers some amazing stories of individuals who have devoted their lives to a cause. Then he brings it around to look at our own lives in a way that says "why aren't you doing something?" I recommend this book for all those out there who can't figure out your passion; what it is that would bring true meaning and purpose to your life. Pick it up, read through it in a few hours then spend days pondering the significance of Hybels perspective of those things which you just "can't stands no more." It just might change your life - and maybe even the world - forever.
Life Changing May 15, 2008 Caitlin E. Custer (Annville, PA) I read this book in the summer of 2007... and still refer to it regularly when faced with issues of the world. It has changed the way I view serving others, career options and what direction I hope the Lord leads me in. I've purchased copies for several friends and have used this book - to find my firestorm of frustration - and let God use that to set me into motion for Him. Definitely well written, easy to read and hard to put down! I think every Christian should read this book. 2 thumbs up!
It Only Takes a Spark September 23, 2008 Timothy Hallman (Fort Wayne, IN USA) When it comes to articulating a passion, few do it better than Bill Hybels. It was with anticipation that I ordered Holy Discontent - I needed to hear someone like Hybels both give me direction and inspire me to fuel the fire. The book is a good combination of personal stories from Bill's life, stories and teachings from Scripture, and stories of some of my favorite characters - Bono, Mother Teresa, Martin Luther King Jr., Bob Pierce. I read through the book quickly, mostly because I was very eager to find out what Hybel's was suggesting. I'm planning on reading it through again more slowly in order to absorb and reflect on what my Holy Discontent is, and how to take action on it.
What Wrecks You Leader? July 23, 2007 R. Hurst (So Cal USA) 5 out of 10 found this review helpful
In 2005, I heard Pastor Hybels present a mesmerizing message called "What Comes Before Vision" This undoubtedly was the precursor of Holy Discontent. In this book, Pastor Hybels has connected with the deepest angst of leaders everywhere. The discontent that resides in all of us when we see something we know is not right and we feel compelled to address. Anyone who has not yet found "it", their calling, their passion to lead, their righteous indignation, their "I can't takes no more" attitude needs to read this book.
