Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
With extraordinary emotional power, Linda Olsson s stunningly well-crafted debut novel recounts the unusual and unexpected friendship that develops between two women. Veronika, a young writer from New Zealand, rents a house in a small Swedish village as she tries to come to terms with a recent tragedy while also finishing a novel. Her arrival is silently observed by Astrid, an older, reclusive neighbor who slowly becomes a presence in Veronika s life, offering comfort in the form of companionship and lovingly prepared home-cooked meals. Set against a haunting Swedish landscape, Astrid & Veronika is a lyrical and meditative novel of love and loss, and a story that will remain with readers long after the characters secrets are revealed.

5 out of 5 stars A Prose Poem in Praise of Friendship   March 25, 2007

Having seen a review of this book in the New York Times, I could not resist purchasing this book by an author whom I did not know because the brief story line offered and the cover, showing the hands full of wild stawberries, drew me on. From the first words, inviting me into the world of Astrid and Veronika, I knew there was a splendid, most beautiful truth about to be told in these two lives. Friendship in its most selfless state and expression is the truth told in words that flow and touch as poetry. I hope this work brings much pleasure and resonance to men and women in all cultures. 5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Book   April 1, 2007

This story was mesmerizing from page one for me. It is the story of a friendship between Astrid and Veronika in its most altruistic state. The gentleness in which each woman listened carefully to the other was captivating. It is a beautiful story of a loving friendship that will bring you to a special place which makes you feel really good. I cannot stop thinking of this story. This is a special read and perhaps a movie may come from it.

A great change from lots of the pop lit thats been circulating lately, this book was engrossing and beautifully written. Seldom lately have I read something that has taken me to a place -- which this did.

This book was recommended to me by a friend who happens to be Swedish. It is a subtle, gentle and surprising book with a slow yet compelling pace. It was a breath of fresh air, and I was able to read it on one sitting!

This should be an all-time best love story. Granted it is not the traditional story of romance, but rather of love and humanity. I don't want to give the plot away, but if you are looking for an inspiringly hopeful and wonderfully joyful book, look no farther!
