Product Description Mastering ArcGIS is an introductory GIS text that is designed to offer everything you need to master the basic elements of GIS. The author's step-by-step approach helps students negotiate the challenging tasks involved in learning sophisticated GIS software. This text employs a carefully developed learning system to help students use ArcView 9.2 or ArcGIS Desktop or higher, to set up and solve GIS problems. An innovative and unique feature of Mastering ArcGIS is its accompanying CD-ROM with narrated video clips that show students exactly how to perform chapter tutorials before attempting an exercise on their own. .

Good software specific book February 15, 2007 Zarking Frood (IN, USA) This is a very helpful book for GIS software (ArcGIS) learners. It's a great supplemental material for my GIS labs. The only way this book can be frustrating would be if someone went through it like a marathon runner.
Would highly recommend February 15, 2007 Deepa Vedavyas (TAMPA, FL United States) This is an excellent book. Exercises after each chapter are easy to follow. Interactive CD is great.
Best book you can get for entry-level GIS November 19, 2007 J. Somerville I am commenting on the version of this text for ArcGIS 9.1, which I think the author updates with newer versions of the software. Quite simply, I feel it is the best introduction you can get to the field of GIS. It gives a conceptual understanding of GIS, without getting too theoretical. Then provides excellent step-by-step tutorials that are easy to follow but very informative. Along the way many of the quirks and tricks of the software are mentioned. Going through this book alone will better prepare you for most entry-level GIS jobs than the majority of candidates out there. The chapters on spatial references, editing, symbology, geodatabases, and Spatial Analyst are great. The only drawback of the book for 9.1 was a few errors in the answers to the chapter questions.
Very effective August 2, 2005 Osma Bin Saeed (Pakistan) 5 out of 6 found this review helpful
This book is an excellent resource for someone trying to learn GIS Application development using ArcGIS. Material covers different topics in very detailed manner and the videos accompanied on the CD are very helpful in learning the software. One can start learning at one's own pace without much help from anyone else.
good reference March 9, 2007 Steven E. Crisci (Richmond, VA) this book was put together in a very organized and easy to understand method.
