5 out of 5 stars concise, easy to follow, highly recommended   May 2, 2006

I hadn't taken a Stastics course in over a decade, and was never much of a math whiz, but purchased this book to brush up on my statistics knowledge for my job. I found it extremely accessible and easy to use, without being too elementary. I actually had fun reading each chapter and completing the exercises and quizzes that accompanied each lesson. My only suggestion for improvement would be to include explanations along with the answer keys for each "quiz." This is a great choice for beginners.

5 out of 5 stars Makes complicated stuff seem simple   June 11, 2004

As an accountant and investor, I have to work with statistics from time to time (too often). I've always had trouble with it, especially graphs and charts. This book is helping me understand things that have always confused me. There are plenty of graphs, clearly drawn and well explained. The first chapter, "Background Math," was especially helpful as a mini-refresher course. So far, I have found the material amazingly simple. I think everybody should read this book (and take all the tests) before attempting a hard-core statistics course. After I am done with this book, I plan to tackle "Advanced Statistics Demystified" and "Business Statistics Demystified."

5 out of 5 stars Interesting and Practical Statistics   October 5, 2004

I wanted to refresh my knowledge of statistics, and this book helped a lot. It is a treasure trove of basic probability and statistics concepts. I like the fact that it discusses hurricane landfall prediction and event bunching, which have been all too relevant. It even discusses the difference between random and predestined digits. The author's cautions about causation assumptions, coincidence and extrapolation are excellent. Going way beyond Cliff Notes, it nevertheles is not overly challenging. The book demystifies realistic, practical problems, such as analizing the results of a quiz given to a large number of students. The practice exams are challenging but not excessively so. Consider buying this book.

2 out of 5 stars oh man...   April 20, 2006

When a statistics book is written under the premise of "demystifying" and simplifying a complex subject starts off with a chapter on basic math, you know you are in trouble. True, the computation of statistics relies on formulas, but they will not help you understand statistics - in fact, students often learn statistics better when the focus is on the construction of concepts over time, not the memorization of random formulas, most of which will be forgotten in the long run.

This book is not entirely useless, but there are so many other better books on statistics. I recommend skipping this math...I mean, statistics book and focusing on them.
