Graphs of Tangent and Cotangent

This topic presents the graphs of the tangent and cotangent functions. These graphs can be obtained by plotting points or using a knowledge of the values of the trigonometric functions, reference angles, and symmetry. The basic transformations of the tangent and cotangent are detailed including the period (portion that repeats) and the phase shift (horizontal shift).

Proposition (Tangent Graph) The tangent function has the following graph

graphs of tangent and cotangent _gr_1.gif]

Notice that the tangent function has zeros at graphs of tangent and cotangent _gr_2.gif] (written as graphs of tangent and cotangent _gr_3.gif] where graphs of tangent and cotangent _gr_4.gif] is any integer) and does not have a maximum nor a minimum value.

Proposition (Cotangent Graph) The cotangent function has the following graph

graphs of tangent and cotangent _gr_5.gif]

Notice that the cotangent function has zeros at graphs of tangent and cotangent _gr_6.gif] and does not have a maximum nor a minimum value.

Proposition (Graphs of Tangent and Cotangent) Period. If graphs of tangent and cotangent _gr_7.gif] or graphs of tangent and cotangent _gr_8.gif] then the graph has period graphs of tangent and cotangent _gr_9.gif]

Example (Graphs of Tangent and Cotangent) Find the period of the graph of graphs of tangent and cotangent _gr_10.gif] and sketch the graph.

Solution. The period is graphs of tangent and cotangent _gr_11.gif] and here is the graph:

Example (Graphs of Tangent and Cotangent) Find the period of the graph of graphs of tangent and cotangent _gr_14.gif] and sketch the graph.

Solution. The period is graphs of tangent and cotangent _gr_15.gif] and here is the graph:

Notice that the minus sign reflects the graph through the graphs of tangent and cotangent _gr_17.gif]-axis. graphs of tangent and cotangent _gr_18.gif]

Proposition (Graphs of Tangent and Cotangent) Phase Shift. If graphs of tangent and cotangent _gr_19.gif] or graphs of tangent and cotangent _gr_20.gif] then the graph has phase shift of graphs of tangent and cotangent _gr_21.gif]

Example (Graphs of Tangent and Cotangent) Find the phase shift and period of graphs of tangent and cotangent _gr_22.gif] and sketch the graph.

Solution. The phase shift is graphs of tangent and cotangent _gr_23.gif] and the period   graphs of tangent and cotangent _gr_24.gif]. Here is the graph:

Example (Graphs of Tangent and Cotangent) Find the phase shift and period of graphs of tangent and cotangent _gr_27.gif] and sketch the graph.

Solution. The phase shift is graphs of tangent and cotangent _gr_28.gif] and the period is graphs of tangent and cotangent _gr_29.gif] Here is the graph:
