Cyclic Group

Definition (Cyclic Groups) Let cyclic subgroup _gr_1.gif] be a group with cyclic subgroup _gr_2.gif] If the set of integral powers of cyclic subgroup _gr_3.gif] is a subgroup of cyclic subgroup _gr_4.gif] with respect to cyclic subgroup _gr_5.gif] then it is called the subgroup generate by cyclic subgroup _gr_6.gif] and is denoted by cyclic subgroup _gr_7.gif]

Definition (Order of an Element) Let cyclic subgroup _gr_8.gif] then the smallest positive integer cyclic subgroup _gr_9.gif] such that cyclic subgroup _gr_10.gif] is called the order of the element cyclic subgroup _gr_11.gif] If there is no such integer, then we say that cyclic subgroup _gr_12.gif] has infinite order. The order of an element cyclic subgroup _gr_13.gif] is denoted cyclic subgroup _gr_14.gif] or sometimes cyclic subgroup _gr_15.gif]

Proposition (Cyclic Subgroups) If cyclic subgroup _gr_16.gif] is a group and cyclic subgroup _gr_17.gif] then  the set of all integral powers of cyclic subgroup _gr_18.gif] is a subgroup of cyclic subgroup _gr_19.gif] and is denoted by cyclic subgroup _gr_20.gif] Further, if cyclic subgroup _gr_21.gif], then cyclic subgroup _gr_22.gif] and cyclic subgroup _gr_23.gif]

Proof. The set of integral powers of cyclic subgroup _gr_24.gif] is non-empty since   cyclic subgroup _gr_25.gif] If cyclic subgroup _gr_26.gif] then cyclic subgroup _gr_27.gif] and cyclic subgroup _gr_28.gif] for some integers cyclic subgroup _gr_29.gif] and cyclic subgroup _gr_30.gif] Then cyclic subgroup _gr_31.gif] as desired.
If cyclic subgroup _gr_32.gif] then cyclic subgroup _gr_33.gif] for some integer cyclic subgroup _gr_34.gif] Thus, cyclic subgroup _gr_35.gif] If cyclic subgroup _gr_36.gif] and using the Division Algorithm, cyclic subgroup _gr_37.gif] where cyclic subgroup _gr_38.gif] it follows that cyclic subgroup _gr_39.gif] Since cyclic subgroup _gr_40.gif] is the least positive integer such that cyclic subgroup _gr_41.gif] cyclic subgroup _gr_42.gif] as desired.
First notice that cyclic subgroup _gr_43.gif] has cyclic subgroup _gr_44.gif] distinct elements. To see this suppose cyclic subgroup _gr_45.gif] with cyclic subgroup _gr_46.gif] then cyclic subgroup _gr_47.gif] and so cyclic subgroup _gr_48.gif] Since cyclic subgroup _gr_49.gif] is the least positive integer with cyclic subgroup _gr_50.gif] it follows that   cyclic subgroup _gr_51.gif] Thus, cyclic subgroup _gr_52.gif] and so the elements in cyclic subgroup _gr_53.gif] are distinct. Finally, consider an integral power of cyclic subgroup _gr_54.gif] say cyclic subgroup _gr_55.gif] then by the Division Algorithm, cyclic subgroup _gr_56.gif] with cyclic subgroup _gr_57.gif] and so cyclic subgroup _gr_58.gif] as desired. cyclic subgroup _gr_59.gif]

Definition (Cyclic Groups) Let cyclic subgroup _gr_60.gif] be a group with cyclic subgroup _gr_61.gif] Then cyclic subgroup _gr_62.gif] denotes the intersection of all subgroups of cyclic subgroup _gr_63.gif] that contains cyclic subgroup _gr_64.gif] We say that cyclic subgroup _gr_65.gif] generates cyclic subgroup _gr_66.gif] or that cyclic subgroup _gr_67.gif] is generated by cyclic subgroup _gr_68.gif]; and write cyclic subgroup _gr_69.gif] when cyclic subgroup _gr_70.gif]

Proposition (Group Generated by a Subset) ) Let cyclic subgroup _gr_71.gif] be a group with cyclic subgroup _gr_72.gif] Then cyclic subgroup _gr_73.gif] is the unique smallest subgroup of cyclic subgroup _gr_74.gif] that contains cyclic subgroup _gr_75.gif] in the sense that cyclic subgroup _gr_76.gif] is a subgroup containing cyclic subgroup _gr_77.gif] and if cyclic subgroup _gr_78.gif] is any subgroup of cyclic subgroup _gr_79.gif] that contains cyclic subgroup _gr_80.gif] then cyclic subgroup _gr_81.gif] contains cyclic subgroup _gr_82.gif] Further, if cyclic subgroup _gr_83.gif] is also a subset of cyclic subgroup _gr_84.gif], then cyclic subgroup _gr_85.gif] if and only if   cyclic subgroup _gr_86.gif] and cyclic subgroup _gr_87.gif]

Proof. Since any intersection of subgroups is a subgroup, cyclic subgroup _gr_88.gif] is a subgroup of cyclic subgroup _gr_89.gif] Also, if cyclic subgroup _gr_90.gif] then cyclic subgroup _gr_91.gif] by definition of intersection of sets. So cyclic subgroup _gr_92.gif] is a subgroup of cyclic subgroup _gr_93.gif] which contains cyclic subgroup _gr_94.gif] If cyclic subgroup _gr_95.gif] is a subgroup of cyclic subgroup _gr_96.gif] containing cyclic subgroup _gr_97.gif] and cyclic subgroup _gr_98.gif] then cyclic subgroup _gr_99.gif] since cyclic subgroup _gr_100.gif] is the intersection of all subgroups of cyclic subgroup _gr_101.gif] containing cyclic subgroup _gr_102.gif] Therefore, if cyclic subgroup _gr_103.gif] is any subgroup of cyclic subgroup _gr_104.gif] containing cyclic subgroup _gr_105.gif] then cyclic subgroup _gr_106.gif] contains cyclic subgroup _gr_107.gif] The set cyclic subgroup _gr_108.gif] is unique in the following sense, if cyclic subgroup _gr_109.gif] is any subgroup of cyclic subgroup _gr_110.gif] also satisfying the hypothesis, then it follows that cyclic subgroup _gr_111.gif] and also cyclic subgroup _gr_112.gif] Finally, let cyclic subgroup _gr_113.gif] be a subset of cyclic subgroup _gr_114.gif] and assume cyclic subgroup _gr_115.gif] then cyclic subgroup _gr_116.gif] and cyclic subgroup _gr_117.gif] since cyclic subgroup _gr_118.gif] and cyclic subgroup _gr_119.gif] Conversely, if    cyclic subgroup _gr_120.gif] then cyclic subgroup _gr_121.gif] and if   cyclic subgroup _gr_122.gif] then cyclic subgroup _gr_123.gif] Therefore, cyclic subgroup _gr_124.gif] as desired. cyclic subgroup _gr_125.gif]
