Product Description
By getting back to the basics, the innovative and time-proven techniques in this resource teach children that doing math can be fun and effortless. Teaching math verbally eliminates the added challenge of having a firm grasp on writing skills that are themselves still being learned, and does away with tedious worksheets. Separating tasks and learning math verbally not only helps children to solve math problems efficiently, but also teaches them to think conceptually rather than focusing all the effort on writing mechanics. This method stimulates speed and accuracy and is critical for success in higher school grades.
The lessons in this book are developed for children in first grade, with exercises geared specifically for their age and ability.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Next Step   March 10, 2008

This book is turning out to be the perfect next step for us. It does make math very applicable to my seven year old in his daily life. The questions are interesting to him and I already notice that he is applying math to describe events that happened during his day. I can see a renewed interest in learning how math applies to his life. I highly recommend this and think it is a wonderful skill for a person to learn "on their feet." I was one who learned with paper and pencil first..so without a pencil I'm hopeless and hoping the problem goes away instead of being able to "think" to get the answer and have a sense of confidence although I have spent many years in math classes.

This book is teaching us to work with numbers and get familiar with order, something that I didn't realize was missing and the cause of our struggle when we started doing subtraction and is really the foundation. I completely agree with the Author and am thankful that they have pointed out the short comings of using paper & pencil. Now we just practice writing our numbers just like we practice writing our letters and have moved away from the math sheets temporarily until we get this foundation. When it comes to math calculations we go to this verbal Math book and just have that to think about. We are not thinking about two things at the same time..1) what is the answer and 2) am I writing this number right. And they are correct..children are faster in math. I think people are probably better in math than they realize..they just never just thought about numbers. Yesterday, my son said.."Six is an important age." I said "why?" He said.."because it is the next set of numbers" 1,2,3,4,5 being the first set, 6,7,8,9,10 being the next set. This book is helping us tremendously with learning the skills to do subtraction quickly. Easy excercies we can pick from and then to mix it up interesting questions. After completing the Reading Lesson Book with great success..my son can read..he is already enjoying thinking things out in numbers. The author is correct in my opinion..now I know why I didn't understand algebra. Thanks so much for not repeating the old educational gap. I like it and hope this review is helpful.

5 out of 5 stars A great way to help one's child get a good head start for later grades   May 7, 2008

Intended for young people ages four to seven (grades K-1), Verbal Math Lesson Level 1: Step-by-Step Math without Pencil or Paper is a guide that parents and educators can use to help bright young people learn math with quizzes and word problems - and no writing! Developed by a pediatrician, Verbal Math Lesson Level 1 uses age-appropriate lessons to teach simple and efficient mental shortcuts. A great way to help one's child get a good head start for later grades. Also highly recommended is the second volume in the series, Verbal Math Lesson Level 2 (9780913063125,, $12.95), ideal for children ages 7-8 (grades 1-2).

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for a reluctant writer   August 2, 2009

We are currently using The Verbal Math Lesson book with our 6 year old daughter and so far, I am very impressed. This is an excellent way to introduce beginning math concepts to a child who dislikes written lessons. Math was a struggle for me in elementary school due to the fact that I disliked writing. My daughter enjoys math, but also struggles with the writing aspect. I can see an amazing difference between verbal & written lessons in just a few short weeks. Not only is she quickly grasping the concepts, but now she ASKS to "do math" whereas previously she would balk whenever the dreaded workbook was brought out. Verbal lessons are also helpful for a child who does not yet know how to read.

If your child needs practice writing numbers, no problem! The Verbal Math Lesson makes it easy to simply practice without having to introduce foreign math concepts at the same time.

It is important to note that this is NOT intended for a child who has little to no mathematical knowledge. The author suggests the book will be applicable to children who can do the following:

Is able to count to 100 (occasional errors are acceptable).
Can identify written numbers (single and double digit).
Understands the concept of "same as", "more than" and "less than" when referring to numbers & quantities.
Knows the difference between right & left.
Recognizes basic shapes.
Has a basic, conceptual understanding of measurements of length (inches, feet) and weight (ounces, pounds, tons).

We purchased both books and plan on continuing with book 2 when book 1 is completed.

This book would be excellent for families looking to teach/reinforce mental math concepts, or if you simply have a child who is "allergic" to pencils or pens. I highly recommend ALL the Math Lesson products.

5 out of 5 stars Great for mental math!   October 29, 2008

I love every product that the Reading Lesson provided and now this Math book and others are a great way to keep your child engaged. My daughter is 5 and she loves when I start this lesson. She does not have to sit with a pencil and this is one way for her to get her mind thinking about math. It is very useful only if your child knows her numbers well. This will help them establish a concrete value to the numbers she just learnt. My daughter loves this book so much that when we are not doing it, she tries to act it herself! I would recommend this book to any parent who would love to put that extra effort in teaching the sometimes complicated concept of math and what better way to do it in such a fun way.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great math resource!   February 5, 2010

The brevity of the lessons holds the children's interest. It really has them thinking in their head. I originally bought this as a supplement for my 8 year old daughter, who struggles with math. She loves it, my other 3 kids like it as well--including my 10 year old so I have just ordered level 2 for him. The kids ASK to do this book.
